While his trademark mixture quick-fire dialogue and fine-tuned monologues has won him plenty of praise, the director's previous film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, touched a nerve for many, with Sorkin's avowed political centrism not going over as well with the younger generation as it had in the past. While Amazon clearly views Being the Ricardos as a major awards play, given Sorkin's solid history of picking up Oscar noms, the public has so far seemed apprehensive about this new project. However, Sorkin assures audiences his film won't be without some lighter moments, as he reports having filmed musical numbers for the first time in his career. The latest Being the Ricardos trailer suggests this week of filming won't exactly be smooth sailing for the I Love Lucy team. Overlaid lines of dialogue suggest tension between the couple over Arnaz's potential infidelity, while a troubling newspaper headline reveals a brewing scandal over Ball's political beliefs, which in the 1950s could end even the most prominent of showbusiness careers. The I Love Lucy writers team is also filled out with some notable comic actors, including the Arrested Development reunion of Tony Hale and Alia Shawkat. Simmons and Nina Arianda will play William Frawley and Vivian Vance, respectively, who played the Ricardos' neighbors Fred and Ethel in the classic sitcom.
